Bard College Performing Arts Building, Annandale-On-Hudson, New York SEI is presently providing steel member connection design services for the Bard College Performing Arts Building designed by Architect Frank O. Gehry. SEI has worked closely with the architect, engineer of record (Desimone,NYC) and the steel fabricator, CWI, of Portland, Oregon to develop the complex array of connections for this project. Piper Shores, Scarborough, ME Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland, ME The Cumberland County Civic Center, host to countless hockey games, trade shows, and concerts, is also one of the largest clear span structures in Maine. During the fall of 1996, Shelley Engineering, Inc. of Portland was asked to evaluate the roof structure of the Civic Center to determine if it could safely support the weight of a new dehumidification unit. Shelley Engineering found the roof not only inadequate to support the unit, but inadequate to support the weight of snow prescribed by Building Codes. The building had survived 21 Maine winters, and the original building designer was of international prominence. The numbers were checked and rechecked, but kept coming up the same. Shelley Engineering conducted numerous site visits to physically measure the roof structure. They discovered many roof members were significantly bent. These members were those that kept coming up short on load capacity in their analysis. The evidence and analysis indicated the roof had been on the verge of collapse several times, but no one knew, until now. The Civic Center hired Shelley Engineering and LeMessurier Consultants of Cambridge to do a total evaluation of their roof. LeMessurier Consultants are world renown for their innovative design of tall buildings and long span roofs, such as the Fleet Center in Boston. The roof defects were wide spread, and needed correction quickly. Shelley Engineering and LeMessurier Consultants were again hired, to design the reinforcement. During the winter of 1997, a snow load monitoring program was put into place. If there was a large snow event, the Civic Center would be temporarily closed until the load lessened. The Portland construction firm, Granger Northern, was hired to install the roof reinforcements-54 tons of steel. They had crews working constantly while the Portland Pirates were on road trips. Megquier & Jones of South Portland, supplied steel on demand. The reinforcement work took 3 months and $350,000 to complete. The result is a roof structure capable of the supporting the snow storm of the century. Bath Savings Institution |
